A big reason why I lose interest in romance novels, especially lighthearted or mm romance, are because books like this. It turns me off to the point that I simply avoid the genre for a long time to recover from my disappointment.
I’ve seen this plot trope play out so many times and nearly the exact same way that it gets exhausting.
The tired trope is the putting of a quirky, so different from you, perfect, everyone loves for some reason love interest in with a resistant, bossy pants that can’t get rid of the quirky character until they inevitably fall for the perfection everyone else so easily falls for. Just change minor background plot devices, change small aspects of characters around, like maybe make bossypants into a beast, and a few light world building details from book to book.
I really hate putting the checklist together on what is always found in these kinds of stories that I feel like at some point an A.I. is going to be able to churn these out one day and deliver similar results because they all feel so similar.
This is just one of those stories meant to be junkfood I guess.
I feel like if I went over my problems with these kind of tropey books that it’s just repetitive for me to go over.
Biggest issue with this book specifically is the writing really didn’t at all build up the relationship to a believable level even for the trope that i hate so much. If this sort of premise/setup us going to be used at least give some tension. From one moment to the next bossypants hates to suddenly kissing up quirkypants, it was super cringey with how bad that was written.
Overall though there are some enjoyable moments here if someone is craving this kind of setup but it just wasn’t for me.
