The premise of the book has a lot of potential – a consultant to villians who has access to limited magic powers is betrayed and needs to fight for his survival. This is backed up by an excellent performance by Jeffrey Kafer, without which I would never have made it so far through the book.

Our main character has a really humerous, cynical, snarkey personality, which at first worked well and was quite enjoyable. After a while, listening become a drag, and I realised that I was getting fed up of being constantly blasted with the main character’s personality at full volume. If MK Gibson could have occasionally shifted the focus to some of the more interesting aspects of the plot, then this would have provided enough of a break for the story to remain enjoyable. As it was, the main character’s personality ended up as a monotonous drone that overpowered an otherwise interesting book.
