Listened daily on my work commute and any other chance I could get. Between the detailed characters written by Morin and the brilliant narration of Naramore (this guy is amazing with all the voices he does), this series draws you in and makes you feel like a part of the rag-tag outlaw crew. I think Roddy the near-genius alcoholic alien chimpanzee-like mechanic was my favorite character. There is a whole great buddy story between him and captain Carl that runs as a backdrop throughout the series.
If you are a fan of Firefly/Serenity, Star Traders video games, or just fine spacefaring science fantasy, do yourself a favor and give this series a chance. It is Well Worth a credit. The only downside is that when it is eventually over you may feel a sense of loss. I miss my Mobius crew, lol!
Update: After taking the time to read some other reviews and being astonished that anyone could rate this less than 3 stars, for the sake of completeness, I feel I should address some of the most common complaints I observed.
Yes, this is a light listen/read great for just relaxing or multitasking. It is excellent for listening while driving. The plots are not complex nor is it very deep in any way. It won’t blow or expand your mind. If you are an intellectual looking for challenging material to contemplate you will be disappointed. If you are anyone looking for fun casual entertainment on par with most television, movies, or comics then this series is for you.
Ah yes, there is profanity, sexism, racism (xenophobia), lots of lying, stealing, cheating, and murder. These are stories about Space Outlaws for goodness sake! By no means are they overly dark, gritty, or nasty. In fact they are rather lighthearted. If you find them offensive then you are likely easily offended.
Spirituality, religion, and god(s) are indeed major (although shallow) themes throughout the series. Nothing about it is “preachy”. I’m a Humanist and found nothing objectionable. Remember, this is a fictional science fantasy series. Don’t take it so seriously or personal. Again, if the religious themes in these books offend you somehow then you are likely easily offended.
Lastly, as for the characters being unlikable and/or lacking development, all the main characters are deeply flawed in some way and I think purposely written to be unlikable from the standpoint of their flaws. As for development, and I won’t spoil anything with details, the over arching narrative of the series is about the maturation and ethical transformation of these often selfish juvenile scoundrels, individually and collectively, into something resembling better less flawed and more virtuous versions of themselves.
I stand by my 5 star rating. This series is just plain and simple fun science fantasy and an all around great bargain for a credit.
