I had just come off of Boyfriend Material, and Red White & Royal Blue, yearning for another similar story, but not a direct version with Playing the Palace. I initially didn’t think much of HTBAB, but something inside me (and the bazillion reviews here and on GoodReads, had me convinced to give it a go.

Knowing in advanced that this is a 3 book series, helps to alleviate the fact that we spent so much time doing so little.
Whole chapters on one night, or one afternoon… However, I would have liked a little more back story on Arden and Caspian. 4 chapters in and we finally learn a TINY BIT about Caspian’s father and that’s all we get. Maybe Alexis wants us to know only so much that Arden knows too… But I also don’t know Arden that well either.

We get a bit more of Ardy and Caspian as people near the end, but there’s no way the book felt complete as it stands alone because of that.

Joel as narrator does an excellent job of all the characters, and the story writing is very much in the POV of Ardy.. I want to know more about Caspian.. And I’m sure Ardy does too.
