Definitely get this as the boxed set, rather than buy each book by itself. Each book is very short, and ends in the middle of the story arch creating a cliffhanger.
The story take a little bit to get going. Over all it’s a good premise and keeps me reading. Characters are developed well, over time, and I enjoyed the journey. The narrator is excellent at creating distinct voices and creating the correct mood.
The first 2 books (again, one book cut in half) starts with a 16 year old, and read like it’s written by a 16 year old. it’s very cliche and a shallow story. I nearly stopped reading – the very I dea that a 200 year old would be attracted to a teenager is always disturbing.
However, after that book 3 on reads like an adult wrote it. More characters, more depth and nuance, and much more interesting plot.
My other pet peeve is, since the story is supposedly 10 books, a huge chunk of it I spent on re-capping the previous books (again & again). I’ve never understood this choice. I know it’s supposed to be so anyone can “pick up a book at any point in the series, and know what’s going on”. Except I would argue it is extremely rare for a reader to pick up book 6 in a series and decide to read it, rare enough that publshers, author shouldnt be making writing decisions based on it – and if a reader *does* they do so knowing they are missing out on a huge part regardlessof all the re-capping. I feel like it’s just a way to get a larger word count – at the expense of the story’s flow.
Anyway, if you can stick it out the first couple books, and wade through the recap repetition. The story is really good and entertaining. I honestly do recommend it. I just wish I had been warned so I knew to expect the above issues.
