I did enjoy this first book in the series, but I feel like it was a bit short and rushed in the last two or three chapters. The book doesn’t get bogged down and game mechanics too much and you do want to root for the characters to succeed. Though I will say that the MC is kind of a jerk at time, seemingly for no reason or because she jumps to conclusions. Overall though she’s not a bad character. I feel like my biggest problem though is the rush of events in the last two chapters. It felt like it was going through the ending motions making some rather important events seem less important than they actually are, like finding an artifact that the MC’s been looking for, killing a significant enemy to the settlement, and resurrecting a killed ally thought dead for good.
Annie Ellicott and Jeff Hayes are some of my favorite narrators in audiobooks and both live up to their reputation. However, because I feel Annie was rushed in the last two chapters of the book she wasn’t able to impart all the emotions that the events would normally have. Still her performance was very good throughout the The other chapters.
Overall a decent start to a series I’m hoping guts better. I did buy the second book on sale, which is what I recommend others do for short books like this.
