Unfortunately, this is not a positive review of this book.
I was so excited to listen to this audiobook, because I haven’t read much about Greece during World War II. However, this book was so much fiction, and so very little historical, that I cannot give it a good rating. As an avid reader of both fiction and nonfiction World War II books, some of the events that happened in this story were so far-fetched, that I truly believe the author did no research at all before writing the story. While the author might have considered the Greek point of view for this VERY fictional novel, it is as if he knew nothing about the Germans, German occupation of countries, German retaliation for very minor events (let alone huge incidents!), German weapons and vehicles, etc. I truly believe that the author just wanted to write a story with Greek main characters and simply decided to place it in the 1940s…
As well, I found the writer’s pacing and time-bending or time-slowing of various points throughout the story too unbelievable.
While the two main characters were likable enough, part of the story is a love story, and I never felt any sort of connection to the love interest. As well, I felt that all other secondary characters were fairly flat and of little interest.
I also struggled with the narrator /reader of the entire story, who seemed to struggle with a Greek accent, and Greek pronunciation of many words.
I very rarely give one stars. I can almost always find something to tell other people about a reason that they may want to read the book however, in this case, I will not be recommending it to anyone and should someone ask me, I would give a firm “no, do not read do not listen to.”
