In this 1st book of E Davies ‘F-Word’ series, IT expert Nic is assigned to overhaul the computer system of Plus, a charity tasked with raising awareness of HIV issues. His contact person at the charity is flamboyant femme gay man Kyle. At first, it appears that buttoned-down Nic, who is a gay transsexual man, has nothing in common with the excitable skirt-wearing Kyle. The reader soon begins to understand these two men have more in common than they realize. Can commitment-phobe Kyle convince Nic to become more of his true self, and in the process, learn that Nic is the man he’s been needing in his life?

I’ve listened to a number of E Davies books to this point. My favorite aspect of their writing is how wonderfully drawn the characters are. The men Davies creates are ordinary guys trying to make worthwhile lives for themselves. And, despite their personal issues and outside pressures, they are still receptive to love when it comes along. I also appreciate the diversity depicted within the gay community as told inside a fictional story. It makes for a more interesting read, while also imparting to the reader something that may not be familiar territory for them. This book, in particular, shows some of the complexities of HIV and male transsexuality.

Joel Leslie’s performance in narrating this book is great. His style of reading adds the perfect tone to the story.
