I’ve seen nearly the same story 3 times now and, while some of it might just be genre tropes, most of the story beats are too similar to be exciting. That said, there’s nothing inherently wrong with the basic plot elements. The most disappointing aspect is how lazy it feels. I can’t say the writer doesn’t improve in their other works, but I also can’t say I’m interested in finding out wether that’s the case. The characters feel unintelligent and often flip between emotional states on a dime. On top of that, the world is not well explained enough to make plot points feel meaningful or anything beyond convenient. my final point feels like more of a nitpick, but the narration feels slow and strained. I’m not sure what kind of accent the narrator is going for here, but I personally found it slightly strange sounding. Again, this is more of a minor issue, and I may have found it less destracting with a different book. in short, I’ve already listened to better versions of this book elsewhere on Audible.
