Rule Breaker is a contemporary office/enemies to lovers romance told in first person POV, with plenty of relationship drama before the happy ending. But, seriously, what else would you expect from a series called “Mixed Messages”? Morton’s not burying the lede here – Gabe is the King of Mixed Messages – and it is not smooth sailing to love. There’s plenty of drama, a lot of steamy sexy bits, yet, surprisingly and thankfully, there’s not a lot of angst.

“I know you’re looking for more, and you shouldn’t be ashamed of that. I wish I could be the one for you.” He looks sad. “Somebody will, but it’ll never be me.”

“You’ve been honest,” I say softly. “I know it’s not going to be you, Gabe. Maybe we can just make each other feel good while it lasts.”

Another terrific performance by Joel Leslie!

Lily Morton writes characters well, but it’s Leslie who brings Dylan and Gabe to life in the best ways possible, even if it meant wanting to reach through the pages to throttle them. Joel performs beautifully, using clear character voices and accents, and simply sucked me into the story keeping a great pace throughout and making this nine and a half hour audio seemingly fly by, while expertly wringing every drop of emotion and drama out of the story.

If you’re into hardheaded men who need more than a little nudge in the direction of true love, you enjoy humorous banter and lots of snark, and a bumpy road to forever doesn’t scare you off, definitely do yourself a favor and grab it on audio.
