Entertaining story. It’s not challenging, it won’t push you to feel for the characters. Unless the description of their physical body makes you develop a strong feeling somehow. It’s included free with the Audible monthly subscription so it will get more attention that it merits.
Minor concern: For a survival story there were far too many extremely lucky breaks that are obviously only there to quickly dismiss complications to move the story along.
Larger concern: The author heavily leans into male-gaze all throughout the story. Somehow rape seems to be considered a mild inconvenience to the victims. There are more details about the negative affects of sunburn than the trauma inflicted on sexual assault victims. Also, apparently in this author’s world all good actors are heterosexual and the worst of all bad actors range from “flamboyant” to homosexual. There’s no in-between. If you think stories from the 80s and 90s are completely non-problematic, you’ll think this is just fine.
I rated performance 3 stars. It was fine. I removed stars due to the choice to have the narrator plainly read the sections where characters are singing. This was awkward, lasted too long, and unfortunately happened 2 or 3 times.
