My big issue is there are points where the book feels inconsistent. Like one of the character’s literally starts having a different voice part way through for no reason I can discern. The echo sound effect is used whenever a character is thinking, except for many cases where it isn’t. An enemy is supposed to be unintelligent to the point of being a non-sentient entity, but it goes into full on monologue and motive rants. We’re given decent view of character personalities and behaviors only for a character going against their normal behavior to be hammered in with the line, “Who are you? The [you] I know would never take this kind of risk. This is hero work and you’ve always said we’re not.”
Then there’s the antagonists. We get their POV a lot. Now at first I figured it was just supposed to be hammer in that they’re hypocrits because their leader is swearing vengeance against Edward for killing the leader’s lover even though he had ordered her to kill Ed and it was therefore self defense. Except that’s the only note these people get, their one trait seems to be getting their own people killed so they can talk about how horrible the ones who killed them in self defense were and through more people into the meat grinder. It just gets so boring when you’ve been in this guy’s head for 10 minutes straight and he’s swearing vengeance against the random soldier he tried to have killed who managed to take out one of his soldiers when he is blatantly aware that if he went first none of them would die.
