I was excited to start this but quickly felt uneasy at the narration and even more uncomfortable as it went on. This story is based on a mix of Celtic mythologies. There are a lot of Irish names and some Irish specific myths alluded to, but every single name is anglicized. The narration is mostly in a British accent. The Folk are Celtic. So far, I’m on chapter 20 and none of them have any Irish, Scottish, Welsh or any other accent. It’s all posh British. It’s uncomfortable given the history of colonization and language loss suffered as a result of that colonization, so at the very, very least, the names could be pronounced correctly in Irish. Caom is said like “keem” or “kweem” not “cam”. Eowen is “owen” not “ay-oh-wen” and so on.
The story itself is good, but I find myself getting more and more frustrated with hearing it as the book goes on. I ended up turning narration off and just reading on my Kindle app.
