I learned of this book from a posting for review copies by the publisher, Spectrum Audiobooks. I requested and received a free review copy of ‘Planet Hero: Civilian’ and this is my voluntary review of it.

Davis, a doctor from our world, inadvertently goes through a portal that ends on a planet in which superheroes and supervillains exist. He acquires abilities himself and must now learn to use them.

The premise of this book is clever and unique (at least to me). I loved everything about this story. How the portal to Earth is opened. How Davis acquires his abilities and learns to use them. Character and plot development. Chuckle moments from the author poking fun at superheroes. All of it! I am deliberately leaving out specific examples because I think it’s worth it to go in not knowing much about details. This is especially true if, like me, you don’t read a lot of LitRPG/GameLit. You don’t need to be a fan to be pleased by this one. You will be a fan after listening. I loved this so much, I must have a second helping!

While author M. A. Carlson has written a spectacular book, I have to heap some of my love onto narrator Jeffrey Kafer. He has an easy, natural cadence. He sets just the right tone for each character, making it all the more believable. I can’t get enough of Mr Kafer’s work and actively search him out when looking for new-to-me listens..

Highly recommended. It’s on my list of favorite listens.
