I listened to all four in the box set. I did this for two reasons.
1. Because I already paid for it.
2. To see if I could finish it.
It had tons of potential but feels like it was not researched or edited enough.
The dialogue was lacking. Too many of the characters had the same point of view even when the writer tried to distinguish them as different. They all spoke with the same vocabulary regardless of where they were from.
The only 2 things that were researched were the locations and the weapons. the weapons were thoroughly discussed even by characters who probably would not have known them so well.
Was their sexism, probably but that was the least of the problems. Too much of the story was about the potential sex life of a 12-13 year old girl.
Too much exhibition was put into dialogue when it shouldn’t have been addressed or should have been written in better.
The relationships in this story feel forced. And time frames are rushed or ignored. The ages don’t always make sense either.
Also, the reading was adequate at best. I often got confused as to who was talking because the tone of voice would not change from one character to another.
I listened the last six hours hoping for something to turn it in a better direction, while at the same time looking more and more forward to writing this.
It sucks because I like the idea of the main characters and this story has a lot of potential.
