When I purchased the first dungeon crawler Carl book I didn’t really expect a lot. I had a bunch of credits and I really wasn’t sure what to listen to and I’d recently started playing Diablo. I was familiar with Jeff Hayes work from the monster Hunter series and was really impressed with this voice work, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I finished this book yesterday and I’m about to start the 6th book in the series. as always, Jeff Hayes voice work is top notch. Every character he voices is distinguishable and unique. I think he’s one of the best voice actors I’ve ever heard. after the fourth book I was still enjoying things but I thought, ” they can’t just keep going through the floors right? not sure how many levels of the dungeon there are, but it seems like if this is a 20 level dungeon, the books are eventually going to start to get a little repetitive, possibly” but that doesn’t seem to be the case. there are story arcs from the other books that are continuing their characters that Carl and donut meet that they care about and more in the loss of. In this book there are more things happening outside the dungeon to Carl and Donut that I never expected that are really interesting and have me wondering what’s going to happen in the next books. when I started this series I never expected to be emotionally attached to a guy running around in a dungeon and is underwear with toe rings and a talking cat, but here I am feeling empathy for Donut and Carl and some specific moderately heart-wrenching situations. these books are really my first lit RPG books and the only thing that I don’t like about them is, I don’t know what other series to listen to next. how could any other books live up to the quality and detail of this series? anyway, if you’re reading this review, you’ve probably read or listened to the other books so you don’t even need to see this. but if you happen to have stumbled across this book and haven’t checked out any of the series, go ahead and start with book one. I don’t think you’ll regret it.
