Good things: Narrators are great and the audio production is 110% top notch.

Bad things: The entire book.

I’ve never listened to a book with such good narration and production and been so bored I didn’t even finish the last 20 minutes.

There are parts where I want to like the characters, but everything just wanders in and out incoherently. One minute the protagonist is fighting a big scary mindflayer, then he’s in an ocean? Oh wait that turns out to be his mental escape world from reality or something. But he’s drowning in his own brain? WTF? The entire book is like this.

The first 3rd is super hand wavy “making up shit as we go along” pseudo magic stuff. The main character is so overpowered it defeats the point of even trying to establish rules for the world.

I really wanted to like this because it’s an African American author and the protagonist is a black scientist. Super right up my alley. But damnit, it was all just done so poorly.

Kudos to the voice actors. Really top notch performances.

Skip the book.
