What disappointed you about Morningwood: Everybody Loves Large Chests (Vol.1)?
I’ve listened to about half the book, and as far as I can tell, there’s no plot. There are entire chapters that are just the stats of the monster. I can’t skip over these because I can’t use my phone while listening. If you want all the details of a monster manual read to you, this is for you. But don’t operate heavy machinery or a car while doing so or else you’ll fall asleep. If you want some plot and a narrative, you should look elsewhere. There are brief references to sex and descriptions of women’s breasts, but these are infrequent. It’s strange to be listening along to the monster manual and then suddenly have someone masturbating in the dungeon. Or have a succubus who gets sexual pleasure from being tortured. And then back to stats from the monster manual.
Would you ever listen to anything by Neven Iliev again?
Not unless I read a review that said the book was substantially different than this book.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Jeff Hays seems like a competent reader. The sound effects of the chest eating people are weird.
You didn’t love this book… but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Iliev doesn’t make any obvious grammatical errors.
Any additional comments?
I’ve listened to a bunch of authors in the genre of D&D-inspired fantasy: Dakota Krout, Robert Bevan, and Drew Hayes. None of these guys are writers of great fiction, but their books are fun and entertaining to listen to. Iliev isn’t in that category.
