Unlike most detective stories from this era, the hero isn’t a nobleman. He needs to use his wits and labor to get answers, not just money. Early on, he falls for the aristocratic lady who is accused of her husband’s murder, but there is no possibility of pursuing her because of class differences (or is there? I see she returns in later books.) It was enjoyable but not totally compelling. I will probably read subsequent books in print from the library.
