First, the good. This book has the best production and vocal talent I’ve ever heard. Soundbooth Theater really outdid themselves, and arguably saved this book from itself. The voices, music, and sound effects were top notch without being burdensome. Levels were balanced near-perfectly, such that the production only added to the story, rather than becoming a distraction.
Sadly, this book has very little plot. The main plot, such as it is, revolves around making certain numbers go up, so that other numbers can also go up, so that the MC can get the macguffin and make numbers go up even more. That is really quite tedious, even for someone who enjoys video and tabletop games. There is a very brief subplot regarding some guy who went crazy for no reason, and the barest hint of a romance story that never really gets developed. Suffice it to say that the story is not the star of this audiobook.
So, if you want to hear an amazing audiobook production, which the likes of Brandon Sanderson really should be using, this is worth a listen. If you want a meaty plot that actually deserves an entire book, look elsewhere.
