The Captain’s Oath starts out hot on the heels of its prequel (Traitors, Thieves and Liars) and delivers nonstop from there, intriguing plot points and intricate details of the White Flower’s world continuing to fall into place for the first half of the narrative. There’s a great deal of gripping plot points, perhaps too many. Towards the end of the book, the narrative seems to buckle slightly under all the dramatic events it holds, as the listener is often left wondering how everything will fall out. Some of the less viscerally dramatic points seem to get a bit starved out. The story ends on this frayed narrative, not a cliffhanger per se, but with irons still hovering in the air, waiting for the sequel to juggle. Although I complained about Ryman’s accent in my previous review, I was used to it by the time I finished this, and really enjoy several of the voices he did.
