I’ve probably read the entire Castle Harbor series in one week. That’s how enjoyable J.P. Oliver’s characters are.
Story: In Last Resort, we meet Dean, the CEO of a company, who’s resort has been built in the beautiful town of Castle Harbor, and Wyatt, an event planner who has been wronged in the past and is out to prove himself worthy. You’d think a match made in heaven right? Dean needs the grand opening to kick off with no issues (pressure from the Board has Dean in all kinds of stress) and Wyatt desperately want to prove to himself he can do this (due to an incident from him past) BUT when eyes lock in the conference room during their meeting, they’ve realized that they’ve meet just the night before and it wasn’t related to work (wink*wink). Although Dean and Wyatt had shared an instant connection, and still do, Wyatt is hesitant to do anything but when Dean proposes they connect AFTER the grand opening of the resort, all it takes is a nosy reporter, a secret past, family stresses, annoying coworkers, and the pressures of the event to shake Dean and Wyatt as they try to tamper down on their feelings and work closely together to assure an event grand opening that Castle Harbor will be talking about for years to come. Only issue is, can Dean and Wyatt keep from attacking each other’s lips long enough to see this event through. We could only hope that the grand opening of the resort brings them closer together (and hopefully in bed) after!
Performance: Austin Jay did well narrating the characters. I’m a sucker for dual narration and for narrators who differentiate all or at least the main character’s voice. I think I’m spoiled in that sense BUT I’m not unfair. Although you couldn’t really tell the difference if he was narrating Dean or Wyatt, he didn’t over do it like I’ve heard some narrators do. All in all, I think I’ll listen to Austin Jay again, depending on the story.
Overall: Last resort has all the goodies you’d want from an a mm romance that is low angst and insta love. If you crave that high angst and drama, maybe skip this one. It’s a light read and I enjoyed it. Happy listening all!
