Narrator makes Sam’s internal voice sound normal, but the voice and inflections he uses for Sam’s spoken comments comes out consistently whiny and overly timid. Voices for other characters all have assorted European accents, but the accents aren’t always consistent. Gideon is supposed to have a slight hint of accent (according to Sam), but narrator starts him off with a strong vaguely Russian/Romanian with hints of French accent that a few chapters later has shifted to a very strong French accent. Andrew, the 800+ year old vampire, starts out somewhere between Spanish and French, and within a few chapters is a straight lilting French accent. Most of the other main characters have an English accent, but Sam sounds American. I have no problem with accents on characters, provided they stay relatively consistent. Shifting the accents of the characters from one chapter to the next is jarring to me. Narrator also puts in random long pauses in the middle of sentences, ending up sounding like William Shatner’s speech patterns. All together, it was just too irritating for me. DNF the Audiobook. I’ll stick to reading this series on my own.
