I picked up this collection on a whim because:
1) I had an Audible Credit
2) It was suggested to me by Audible
3) It was 85+ hours of content for one credit. Hard to pass up.
I let it sit in my library for a few months and when I had run out of new Timothy Zahn to listen to I started this. I wasn’t hooked at first, the opening story didn’t really grab me. But I kept listening and I am really glad I did.
Captain Carl Ramsey and the Moebius crew have a place in my heart next to the crew of the Enterprise, DS9, and the Serenity. I didn’t think that anyone could ever dream up a wizard that would capture my imagination and admiration better than Gandalf, but JS Morin did it with Mordecai The Brown. Mort is hands down my favorite grumpy all-powerful spell caster.
The pitch for these stories is definitely “Firefly with wizards” but it goes beyond that. Morin does a fantastic job building a complete universe with well-rounded characters. Mikael Naramore brings them to life. I actually can’t imagine enjoying these books as much if I had just read them. The voice work by Naramore is excellent.
What had originally been a throwaway purchase for me has become one of my favorite audiobook series. I found myself rationing the stories, purchasing other audiobooks and listening to them instead, so I wouldn’t go through Moebius missions too quickly. I am listening to the final mission now during my commute to work. I have already purchased the Astral Prime Complete Collection and will absolutely pick up the Mercy Missions collection when it is released. And then once I’ve listened to them all, I’ll probably go back and start all over again, the same way you watch TNG reruns even though you’ve seen the episode 100 times.
Buy this book. It’s worth the money and the time.
