Based on reviews, I was hyped! There are some great LitRPG books out there and with a 4.8 star rating I was expecting this to be one!
Wow I was disappointed! (very light spoilers ahead)
“Dante’s Immortality” is a mediocre book at best that I believe has fallen victim to lazy writing and poor narration. This story tells you it’s plot from start to finish with 2d characters and paragraphs of “despite dante’s hesitation, he went for it” “Dante decided to go left this time” “Dante mused” “Dante was confused”.
You’ll find no secrets in this book. Everything, including the worlds ridiculous cultural norms, is handed to you on a silver platter and explained in length once it’s brought up as an important point to the plot. Rarely do I feel like knowing as much as God is a good thing, and in this story, knowing a bunch of useless or boring characters and ALL of their secrets (if it affects Dante) is a BAD thing.
Dante himself in unispired. He’s the classic oblivious type that is handed incredible potential and decides to hide it all while going through the usual school power-up arc around beautiful and sexually aggressive women. Despite rarely picking up obvious social cues and constantly needing to be told “this is how the world works,” he gets bouts of genius where he understands concepts he has no right to. The intricacies of space and time “just make sense” to Dante who spent his whole childhood on the streets being scorned by everyone? I’m sorry, no.
I hate writing so this is the end. A little about me, I’m a salesman and storyteller. I have a favorite audio book from every major genre listed on Audible. I love good stories with complex characters and find neither in this book. I hope this review will balance out the 4.9 stars and raving fans that have posted a plethora of 5 star reviews.
