The name seemed cheesy so that put me off at first but as soon as I gave this series a shot, I was hooked. I could not be bothered to pull my headphones out for a solid week. (yes I listened to the 5 current books in this series in a week)
The story is tight and full of detail and there is very little filler. Every detail felt like a clue but I never felt like the plot was predictable.
The voice acting is great! there’s a tiny amount of sound effects that kept me more engaged but wasn’t distracting.
I’d describe this as the nightmarish but hilarious lovechild of Hitch Hikers Guide and Hunger Games. It’s over the top, ridiculous, fast paced and lots and lots of fun. Carl doesn’t get lost in the weeds by reading bricks of stats like a lot of LitRPG series.
One disclaimer though, there is a lot of profanity. if that’s something you don’t enjoy, this book and series might be a bit overboard.
Overall, it’s been one of the best series I’ve listened to in a long time and I can’t get enough. as long as Matt Dinniman, Jeff Hays and the folks at Soundbooth Theater keep putting out books of this quality, I will continue to frantically shove my audible credits their way.
