Before anyone reads this ‘review’ I want to note that i enjoyed this book and that might not come off so much in the review simply becuase i focus, often times on the negatives. However in the litRPG space i recommend this books for anyone that enjoys a well fleshed out world and an enjoyable card system.

So, lets start at the top and i’ll do my best to avoid spoilers but just in case, take care.

The Audio

Its soundbooth theatre so if you’ve listened to Dungeon Crawler Carl or the like you’ll find the audio great if not awesome, personally i like them and think they do a fantastic job. And though at times they can come up with some annoying voices its generally meant to be in service to those characters.

The Main Character

So, the mc in demon card enforcer is average at best and cringeworth at most, though the mc is an edge-lord esque character throwing out horrid one-liners(that he is self aware of) with a somewhat tragic backstory he’s still likeable and from my time listening to the book he didnt get to the point i wanted to stop listening, which is uncommon in the litrpg space and one of the main reasons i drop books.

His half romance, half mentor role with our female secondary lead was probably the part i had the most trouble with throughout the book, though ill note that even though there are jokes about said romance and to a certain extent some light sexual tension our mc sees this character as someone to help and save from this life of crime. The secondary lead is written as an intelligent booksmart young woman who has done incredibly well throughout her school life and though written to be naive she can be outright idiotic at times both with her understanding of the world around her and even the incredibly relevant and important card system that has been active in this world since medieval times. the fact that she understands nothing about a system that would shape history and would likely be taught heavily in schools is what i think is a major flaw in the story, though being unaware and ignorant of something of this scale and the world i can honestly forgive. since it sets up so that our mc can mentor her somewhat.

what i can’t forgive is the outright cringewortihy jokes, and flirting and awkward relationship she has with our mc, its one of the hardest parts to listen to throughout the book, and I don’t honestly think im smart enough to put into words how bad it honestly feels, that being said most listeners can likely write it off as a young adults version of what they think being romantic/sexy is.

The Crime Family(Light Spoilers)

Holy shit this is what the Simpsons meets Sopranos feels like. our mc is the TOP enforcer in this crime family, hes been around since the beginning to now, and yet seems to be the only competent member throughout what should be one of the largest criminal syndicates this world has currently introduced in this book, but hey alot of low end criminals and thugs are dumb, im cool with that. and to a certain extent we get an explanation for this in that their oldest and best members have been killed off. The difficult part comes in how this organization is ran and how the relatively obvious plot twists play out. I am not a smart man but i could easily spot our main antagonist a mile away, ill leave it there for the sake of spoilers but i cant imagine anyone who listens will not see everything coming(which to our authors credit might be what they want.)

The World and Card system

this is outright the best part of this book, the world feels original and the card system is well fleshed out as the story progresses and one of the main reasons i listened throughout the book. The world itself is well thought out and the card system is interesting, easy to grasp and somewhat unique. Honestly its good enough that i dont have much to say about it otherwise.

Outright this book feels like a good start to an authors first foray into writing both inside and outside the litrpg genre, outside of the litrpg space I might not recommend this to a friend but, inside the space I absolutely would. I’ll be happy to look for the next book in this series, and any other series they may start in the future.
