… but, alas, nothing ever did. It reads more like a diary of Ishmael’s wonderfully perfect and privileged life aboard the Lois than a well-developed story. He never encounters any major problems, everyone in the entire universe admires him in some way, he’s a genius, and there’s never a shortage of women to describe in great detail.

SPOILERS:
I thought *for sure* when that kid, Pip, got mugged, we were being introduced to some plot point that would evolve throughout the story. Nope. Then when they started the flea market selling, I figured, surely there would be something interesting now (besides descriptions of females and belts, which, the belts do sound really nice haha). Also nope. What about the mysterious “Lois” on the manifest? “Nah all ships do that!”
I get that this is the first book in a long series so it’s trying to set the scene, but it’s kind of drawn out and monotonous (I suppose, much like life aboard a ship).
I feel like there was potential for this to be a great story, but, I sadly have zero desire to read/listen to the rest of this series if all 7ish books lack a plot like this one.
