hey I have listened to a few of this production studios audio books before and have underwhelmed by their efforts. I usually hate sound effects like, “he opened a metal door” ZINK. the ZINK effects is usually too loud and sometimes plays over the performer. This outing, however, is their best work! I was presently surprised. distracting and or just plain LOUD sound effects are absent, most of the effects actually add to the imersive performance. sometimes the synthetic voice modulator that is used on some of the male characters gets to be …. grating. the few times it was used in this audio book it was much less … out of place. if sound labs reads this, WELL DONE. the songs that other reviews have mentioned range from silly to just repeating a chorus or two. these little diddies pop up pretty often but are not very long. there was one nice spot the performers harmonized, but you are not going to get a “rock opera” as i saw another reviewer put it. there is a very pretty humming that permeates a good portion of the audio journey that is melodic and thought was like the best thing about this book. ok, so the performance aside, the writing is, well, its ok. for a harem book its not bad. but the recurring theme is there a MC that is nothing special and ends up doing great things or has a million women jumping in his pants. there was no pants jumping in this book (maybe later in the series) at all. there was a little heavy petting that was not graphic and wasn’t long at all. I have read other big name authors sex scenes that were more illicit or illustrative. so the weak mc is also held up by the lead female chapter, I think foil is the proper term. she is the one teaching him about the world and thusly the reader. Idk, I have seen this in so much scifi that it gets stale quick. at one point he asks her a question and she says something to the effect of ‘you can Google this stuff too you know.’ I think the author may have been poking fun, but I cant be sure. there were a couple times I actually got a little disgusted by the mc honestly. he is a perfectly normal young adult male, but is on this worlds version of welfare! he mentions he is frequently broke living in NYC. not once does he mention even thinking about getting a job or how being a musician qualifies him for living on the government tit. other than that though he treats the female lead pretty well, and he is nice enough. the whole harem genre can either get perverted or endlessly ecchi I think is the right word. I think it is pretty light hearted and cute for the most part in this book. the premise is a little litrpg with Pokémon go. I didn’t know if u was going to like it, but I ended up truly enjoying it. its not going in depth with world building or stats. the battles are of an appropriate length and depicted well. only once did I want to yell Pikachu I choose you! the monsters so far have all been based on some form of old myths like kappas from Japan as well as a few others I don’t want to mention for spoilers. all in all, if you are still reading this I recommend you give it a shot for the performances alone!
