Would I recommend this book?

I will start out with the conclusion, just for the people who tend not to spend the effort to read an entire review. Yes, I recommend this book. It’s quite short with it’s 10 hours and quite entertaining. It somehow reminded me a bit of ‘Off to be a wizard’.. For more information about how I formed my opinion, keep reading, if you’re not interested in the rest of the review, then start listening to the book 😉

Would I listen to other books in this series?

First of all, I go through a lot of books. Mostly I tend to be attracted to longer books and a trilogies, simply because it offers more entertainment. I am hoping Villains rule will turn in to at least a trilogy, but anything beyond that has the possibility to turn out great.
One of the most important things to me, after devouring another book is the question if I want to continue the series or not. Even if the first book is entertaining there have been cases where I decided not to continue with the series just because I already had enough. In this case it would be a delight to further explore the world where Jackson is the number 1 villain.

What made this book stand out?

To be honest, because of the cover art I initially skipped this book. Audible seems to offer various ‘villain books’ and this one did not seem that attractive. I can admit my initial mistake; the book was very entertaining. The main character; Jackson made it worth the 1,5 day it cost me to finish the book. He has the confidence needed to be the number one villain of all time. His smooth way of talking strengthens the impression that he is a very intelligent individual who is always in control of the situation, even if he isn’t. Amongst all the panicking characters he stands out, and ties everything together. I was a bit disappointed that he wasn’t as ‘evil’ as I might have hoped, but that did not take anything away from the experience.

The Narration

In short, the narration was excellent. In my opinion Jeffrey’s performance really suited the book. As an aspiring narrator myself I can appreciate how he brings the characters to life and how every character is given it’s own personality through correct intonation and accenting. I haven’t heard any of his other work, but a quick look through his audible page showed me he is a very experienced narrator, and it definitely shows.

Conclusion

A short book which I hope will develop into a series. I went through it in 1,5 day. The ‘blurp’ did not give any information about the actual book however, and the cover art was misleading as well. It is actually a short ‘adventure’ book where the main character isn’t the hero but the villain. This setup is not exceptionally new but it is executed properly. I am happy to have been able to add this title to my library.
