The perpetual sing-song voice of the narrator in a high register made me feel like she was reading for an audience of young children. It nearly ruined the book which has some fairly sinister scenes and plot twists. There was no suspense, no gravitas. no pointed pauses to let the “dime drop” in the mind of the listener. I had to work to ignore that voice and tried to focus on the story. … and then that sing-song led right up to the end and without any kind of vocal warning or finale of punctuation the book was over. i was genuinely waiting for it to go on to the next chapter when the truth about Mr Butterworth would also come out and THEN they could all live happily ever after. But, no, I’m cheated by an abrupt ending once again!
