This was an excellent listen. I don’t normally listen to this genre, typically I go for higher-aged protagonists, but I wanted to try something different while also of course staying in my comfy realm of fantasy. This book delivered, it was very eerie with that heavy paranormal and magic feel. Quite dark & gothic in terms of the feel of the book, so right up my alley.
I loved the worldbuilding and the lore from Irish mythology used here. Ian was a great protagonist I really did root for. I felt my heart break for him SO MANY TIMES. I feel like he is owed a WHOLE LOT, that is for sure.
I also really like this book’s message. The outcome of who Ian really is was super interesting to me, and I appreciate how it’s clear he’s simply not evil. I had questioned why he was treated that way the entire time, and I wonder if the reason (trying to avoid spoilers!) will actually help him later on in terms of powers.
This book actually made me cry toward the end. I am a sap, but I’m of the opinion that if a book makes me cry, it must be good. The outpouring of emotion here was intense and excellent. The author’s descriptions were amazing and extremely immersive, I had the book playing like a movie in my head, which was wonderful.
The narrator did an excellent job bringing it to life. He was great at varying voices and really dripping the emotion from characters when the spoke, which I appreciated. The voice was a pleasant one to listen to, and the acting skills were on point.
I would definitely love to read book 2 and highly recommend this to folks who really love eerie paranormal fantasy.
