First, the narrator did a fantastic job. Some audio book narrators bore me or grate on my nerves. This one made me not want to stop listening. Many reviewers commented negatively on the content of the story and I did question whether I wanted to listen to this book. I’m glad I didn’t follow those reviewers’ advice and let myself be the judge. The story is gritty and yes, sometimes hard to bear insofar as the treatment of the children. However what bothered me more than the relationship between Wavy and Kellen was the childhood Wavy had to endure at the hands of her parents. Wavy survived in her own way with a pittance of parental caring and affection. This is a different kind of love story but nonetheless the story of how two people who faced serious abuse discovered their own way of loving and understanding of love.
