Jack Olsen is at his best in this book about Arthur Shawcross. The story telling flows like a novel. The use of transcripts from actual psychiatric interviews with the killer gives the reader an idea of the self aggrandizing view the killer has of himself, as well as his personality quirks. Olsen uses interviews with those who knew the murderer to progress the story. He also doesn’t dismiss Shawcross’s victims as nameless sex workers. The book includes good biographies of the women that include quotes from family members and friends of the victims.
The narrator, Kevin Pierce, is as talented as the author. His voice, pace, and tone good be the audiobook a good flow. He does character voices well with the main characters having distinct voices. His voice when reading as Shawcross is haunting. The voices he uses for women are better and more identifiable than most male narrators do.
