Jeff Hayes seems to have a versatile repertoire of voices, and his diction and inflection are clear and soothing to listen to. But his natural drawl, when not in a character’s voice, is absolutely wrong for this story. The transition from Lee’s conversations to his internal monologue feels like the listener is being wrenched 2000 miles from New York to Texas and back every other sentence. Set this guy reading cowboy stories, or put that smooth, reassuring tone into the inspirational or self-help section… somewhere where half of the chapters don’t end distractingly with the word “cookin’ “
