I’m about 44 hours into the story that I listen to on the way the way to work. Phil Thron is a fantastic narrator with a voice similar to James Spader which greatly enhances the experience. The story may not be the most original but the execution is flawless. Zed, a regular nobody comes home to find his step dad eating his mom and not in a kinky way. The world is barely aware of a new virus that seems to have weird effect on people. His step-dad bites him but is quickly dispatched by Zed which starts a long streak of zombie killing, people rescuing and lots and lots of running away as the world slowly turns into an apocalyptic nightmare. Bobby Adair takes his time with the story without slowing down even once. Plot twists and unexpected betrayals keep you on your toes as Zed and his friends Murphy and Russell the zombie run from one sticky situation into another. This brings me to the minor flaws. First and foremost, it seems nobody in the world has ever seen a zombie movie as there are no references at all and the word “zombie” isn’t even used. “Infected” or “whites maybe be original alternative terms but I find it hard to believe that nobody considers the flesh eating mutants similar to George Romero’s creations. Copyright issues, I guess. Secondly, there are smart phones around and Zed uses a mobile phone to text his various “girl” friends and the internet is available but nobody even tries to reach out to find if there are other survivors. It’s a bit hard to believe that neither Zed nor the people he meets on the way even try to find out what exactly is happening through Facebook, Reddit or Twitter. Zed collects a USB stick with information on farming and such but never gets the idea to access the internet himself or try to find a library or a book store. As mentioned, these are just minor flaws and so far the story is highly enjoyable.
