I find it almost impossible to read/listen to a single book in this series without shedding more than a few tears. TJ Klune has certainly mastered the art of invoking intense emotion in a reader. Since the core of this series focuses on family relationships, both the ones a person is born with and the ones a person finds, there is plenty of emotional story to explore.

This book is told from Carter’s perspective. Some of the chapters seemed to drag a bit, but those sections of the story did reflect Carter’s long journey. I felt a bond with Carter because I am an oldest sibling, and I understand the compulsion to protect younger siblings at all costs even when they are particularly annoying little brats. Having siblings add their input into your relationships is another joy I can share with Carter. Ugh… Watching Carter’s relationship with Gavin unfold is an emotional experience filled with angst and uncertainty that is balanced nicely with a dash of humor when Carter’s brothers share their relationship advice.

This was a beautiful story with the perfect narrator. I can’t imagine this series being voiced by anyone other than Kirt Graves. I enjoyed the first book of the series, but the narration compelled me to buy the rest of the series immediately after I had finished the first one. This was an excellent conclusion to the story, but I wouldn’t object to another peek into life in Green Creek.
