Great start to a series. While there is nothing new or unusual about the story/scenario overall it’s a very entertaining, engaging and enjoyable listen with a great cast of characters and fantastic narration. It pulled me in immediately and held my complete attention from start to finish.

The story starts 3mos after the event and then quickly goes back to the beginning of the event. It’s told through different POV’s of each family member who are all in different places when the event happens and their struggle/journey to get home. No matter what you do to prepare for an emergency you can never be fully prepared. Even though the story switch’s between different members of the family and their struggle the story never feels choppy or confusing. It’s constantly moving and flows smoothly. It tells a realistic story of what would/could happen and how fast society would descend into chaos. If you don’t think society would descend into chaos quite rapidly your fooling yourself. It gives you something to think about.

It is the first in a series so it does end a slight cliffhanger. It was a good place to stop. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series. Hopefully the next book will be available on Audible soon. Not to give any spoilers but who was Grayson burying in the beginning of the story?

Interesting and well rounded cast of characters. Even though most of the characters are extended family members each has a different personality with strengths and weaknesses. As do each of the people they meet after the SHTF. They were believable and relatable. We all have that one sibling you just want to slap some sense into.

Kevin Pierce does a fantastic job with the narration. He just has one of those voices that was made for narrating books. It pulls you right into a story. Love listening to anything he is narrating. Clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Great character voices. He brings the characters, their emotions and the story to life. Hopefully he will be narrating the rest of the series. Always very enjoyable.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily provided this review.
