I enjoyed this second novel of the Shadow Sun series. If you’re just setting out, I suggest starting with Shadow Sun Survival. The story takes place post-apocalypse after a group of aliens from the galactic core transform the Earth into a world filled with monsters and governed by game rules and stat points.

There is a good amount of city building as Allister continues to grow his empire in advance of the end of the stabilization period. I enjoyed how the aliens were a constant looming shadow throughout the story.

The different characters are all interesting and have unique voices. Allister’s pet bear was one of my favorite characters. He showed a lot of personality despite being a bear.

The only real problem I had was that Allister’s enemies tended to be underpowered and damn near suicidally stupid. They tended to attack him, despite being at a phenomenal disadvantage. I still enjoyed watching Allister deal with them, though, and the ever-present danger of the oncoming aliens was threatening enough.

Soundbooth Theater did a good job with the recording, there were multiple narrators, and the occasional sound effects and background music added to the atmosphere.

I strongly suggest this novel for anyone who likes LitRPG and post-apocalyptic fantasy, though you should probably start with book 1.
