JTJ and cast did a wonderful job on this, the problem is the story, which is a great idea and some of the concepts are good too such as the magic/cultivation system. However the characters suck, especially the MC. He has lived an entire life already full of death, trials, and constant fighting, which would have a profound effect on anyone, but the effects shown are flat, he pushes the group to get stronger and they fight all the time yet almost every encounter kills them, he is so often on the brink of death we, the reader, have a hard time caring anymore. With everything he had been through he still observes propriety, and has modern Western ethics that would have gone right out the window in the cruel new world he is in. For some reason he lies to his group about how he knows what he knows, which I kinda get, but the lie is absurd and leaves many many holes that don’t explain how things could change unexpectedly. The “bad guys” are over the top comic book villains, and the “good guys” are also just purely good, that isn’t realistic at all and keeps us from connecting to the story. Others have complained about Freya’s character being annoying, but given her situation I think it’s understandable that she would use dirty and playful banter as a defense mechanism so she doesn’t really bother me, other than her gratitude being underwhelming. I will not be continuing the series, and there is more to say but to summarize, awesome narration, terrible story
