It can be hard to figure out what rating to give to the first book in a series. We don’t know how long the series will be – the plot arc, character development, and world-building has only begun. So, if I don’t particularly like the main female character, that might not be a bad thing because maybe she matures more and more as the series progresses. I don’t really understand the aliens or why they’ve established a presence at this output, but maybe all will be revealed in future installments.

So, I can’t really say whether this is a good series or not. What I do know is that there were several times where I laughed out loud at the witty dialogue between Landry and his AI. And I had forgotten that this was the first book of a series, because when the story suddenly ended, I was distinctly disappointed because I wanted to continue hearing the story.

The narrator did a great job; he’s got exactly the right style and tone of voice for this type of story (and he doesn’t do exaggerated falsetto voices for female characters, which I’m thankful for). I’d have no hesitation listening to this narrator in the future.

I will certainly be looking forward to the next installment in this series. It’s not epic sci fi in terms of hard science, but it’s interesting and enjoyable, and I want to know what happens next in the story.
