This is one of my favorite true crime books that I’ve listened to. It goes deep into the backstory of Shawcross and several of the victims family members. I’m always more interested in why someone does what they do instead of only the shocking telling of the crimes. And it’s heartbreaking but interesting learning how the crimes affected those left behind. It was also fascinating listening to the psychiatric interviews done with Shawcross trying to nail down a diagnosis of his mental condition. I highly recommend this book if you are more interested in the “why” instead of just the “what.” I wish more true crime books took this approach.
