I picked this book up because I have liked other books by this author. I haven’t listened to Anthony Ray Perez before but I enjoy most of Joel Froomkin’s narrations so I decided to give this one a chance. The story starts with a sort of opposites attract when Max and Jordan meet at a farmer’s market. Jordan is a quiet, emo style, kid. He knows Max but they’ve never spoken. Max is a baseball player, dude-bro. Max doesn’t want to work at State Farm like his mom wants him to, so when he sees Jordan’s mom struggling with their food truck he takes a job working for her and he and Jordan agree to try to get their food truck business off the ground. The story ends up being about so much more as Max struggles to deal with his first time not being quite consensual. And Jordan who is struggling with the loss of his father realizes that his mother has a problem that is risking their home and livelihood. Both boys struggle to handle their respective situations while falling for each other even though they seem so different. I’ll admit that I found Max just a little bit more appealing as a character because of his sense of confidence but I love that he does learn to be a bit more vulnerable and allows Jordan to care for him. It was a good story and I definitely recommend it. Joel did his usual great job narrating this and I really liked Anthony Ray Perez’s voice and would definitely listen to more by him in the future.
