This book was not for me. I was hoping for something scary, and while there was tons of violence and gore, that doesn’t give me a fun creepy feeling. It was just gross and I was not hooked by the well-trodden premise of a dude trying to save his wife. *small spoiler for first chapter* Miscarriage being the motivation for the character to end up in the black farm felt hollow. It is such a common experience, and the characters’ outsized reactions, paired with a superficial description of how it feels to experience a miscarriage felt cheap to me. I must admit that I didn’t finish it, so there is some possibility that the main character grows through his experiences, gaining the emotional depth that he initially lacked and would have enabled him to face the reality of losing a baby and support his wife through their grief. That would be an interesting story, but, I wasn’t getting that vibe from the book.
