This is the story of forbidden love in 19th century England. I actually bought the book last year, but couldn’t read it because I was afraid it would be a bit too dark (at the time I wanted happy books!) When I saw that it was out as an audiobook and narrated by Joel Leslie, I jumped at the chance to listen. I am so glad I did.
Joel Leslie is an excellent narrator, period. This book is no exception. I’m not going to lie, there are a few dark spots in the story dealing with poor social conditions, especially for children, jail conditions and of course, homosexuality. Joel Leslie’s performance made the situations seem real, (I teared up in a few places), but his narration of these situations added to the overall enjoyment of the listening experience.
I don’t think I can say enough about Mr. Leslie’s performance or the book. Just give it a try.
