This series up to now has been mostly fine, but it really lacks in some areas. The premise and setting are very interesting and enjoyable, but beyond that there are definitely issues. Characters are extremely flat, and two dimensional. The protagonist is always “right” and any moral quandaries or problems are completely black and white with no grey or questioning. It feels like most of the human elements are glossed over with no real impact to get back to stats and fighting and territory acquisition. We’re told how deeply the main character cares and feels about lives lost in one part and we’re immediately off to a happy fishing trip the next, all those pesky feelings forgotten until the next battle where people die, etc.
The first two books are so so to okay, but I don’t think I’ll be continuing the series past this point.
