Not all but many of the Manga stories have characters that are overlooked or considered worthless. Then the character of the story proves them wrong.
What makes these stories enjoyable could be the path they take, the characters, or both. This story has both.
Book 5, I am enjoying the series and I have currently listened up to book 7.
