the story and characters are good. not extraordinary, but solidly good. BUT, there is way too much technical detail on using “essense” (the magic) which really did not help me understand it. I’m not sure it is necessary to understand it to enjoy the story. but all this detail makes it seem like the reader is expected to understand, and that it might be important. just distracting, time wasting clutter.
