Good book written in a universe of books I never knew existed

On its own it is a pretty good book.
I have no idea what the other books in this universe are like but it didn’t seem necessary to enjoy this book.

The book completely skips ver the main characters upbringing and military training. He is an interesting character and the book I would really want to read would be about him as a kid.
