This whole series is a lot of fun. I went in, expecting that I would listen to a few “missions,” probably get bored, and wander off to another book long before I finished it. Instead, I found myself plowing through and finding excuses to listen to more of it. Now I am done with all 85 hours and I already miss it.
The stories are not meant to be great literature. The author, himself, says that this is meant to fill the “good bad guys in space” hole left by Firefly. It does a good job. The basic structure is an outlaw small cargo vessel and crew and its fast-talking conman captain and lovable crew all running around the galaxy, pulling off adventures by the skin of their teeth. Each member of the crew has their own personality and motivations. Over the series, though, those characters grow and change in cool and interesting ways. I wouldn’t have lasted, if it was just the same old hijinks. Instead, the crew by the end is not very much like the crew at the beginning – and that growth is a lot of fun to hear.
